Key Moments from the 2002 European Grand Prix
Lap 1 | Allan makes a good start and is up two places to 11th with Mika 12th. Allan is on a two-stop strategy while Mika has a heavier one stop fuel load. Rubens Barrichello leads at the end of a dramatic opening lap from Ralf Schumacher Michael Schumacher Juan Pablo Montoya David Coulthard and Kimi Raikkonen. |
Lap 3 | Mika drops a place to Olivier Panis’s BAR-Honda. |
Lap 5 | Allan is in the top 10 as Jarno Trulli spins his Renault. |
Lap 6 | Mika loses 12 seconds and drops to 20th after a spin at the first corner. Already he is experiencing handling problems caused by a high level of degradation on his tyres as a result of his heavy fuel load. |
Lap 7 | Allan loses a place to the recovering Trulli who is also on a two-stop strategy. |
Lap 21 | Allan pits in 11th place but loses some six seconds as the team has a problem with the left front wheel. |
Lap 23 | Mika pits earlier than scheduled for a new set of tyres. This will mean another stop later. Michael Schumacher meanwhile attempts to close right onto team mate Barrichello’s tail in an attempt to leapfrog him at their respective pit stops. But the world champion spins and costs himself 11 seconds. He rejoins still second ahead of brother Ralf. |
Lap 25 | Leader Barrichello pits and rejoins with his advantage still in place. |
Lap 39 | Allan running 10th is the first of the two-stopping cars to pit and drops to 14th place just one place ahead of team-mate Salo who sets his fastest lap of the race in 1m35.267s. |
Lap 45 | Barrichello’s second stop is marginally faster than Schumacher’s and he retains his lead after his second stop. |
Lap 46 | Allan is passed by Heinz-Harald Frentzen’s Arrows for 13th place. He is now in a lot of pain from his new seat digging into his shoulder. |
Lap 47 | Mika makes his second pit stop for tyres. An 8.7 second stop sees him re-emerge in 15th spot. |
Lap 51 | Mika still has handling problems and has a third spin stopping shortly afterwards with suspected gearbox-related trouble. It is the end of a disappointing race for the Finn who had put his TF102 in the top 10 for the fifth time in qualifying this season. |
Lap 56 | Allan registers what will ultimately be the best speed trap classification in sector 1 – a mighty 275.7kph. |
Lap 58 | Allan sets his fastest lap of the race with a 1m35.503s |
Lap 60 | Barrichello takes the second win of his career. Schumacher follows him across the line with Kimi Raikkonen third for West McLaren-Mercedes ahead of Ralf Schumacher Jenson Button and Felipe Massa. Allan finishes 14th and needs to be helped out of the car such is the pain from his shoulder. |
