Rd.7 Turkish Grand Prix

Who will capture the top spot at the highly technical Istanbul Circuit?

The stage for the seventh race of the 2009 season will be the difficult counter-clockwise Istanbul Circuit at the Turkish Grand Prix. Held in August (2007) and May (2008) in previous seasons, the 2009 Turkish GP will be held in early June, switching spots with the Monaco GP. The Istanbul Circuit features several difficult sections, including the high speed Turn 8 (a combination of four corners), Turn 9 immediately after a downhill section, and the smallish Turn 13 just prior to the final turn on the course. The first half of the circuit includes a left-right-left combination in Turns 3 through 6; drivers must stay in a smooth rhythm to negotiate this section effectively. The Istanbul Circuit also features a low-speed section, which means that teams don't have the luxury of preparing a simple maximum-speed setup. Panasonic Toyota Racing has finished out of the points for the last two years, but expectations are high for Jarno and Timo to turn in an electrifying performance here.

2008 Grand Prix

The 2008 Turkish Grand Prix was held on May 11. Jarno made a good showing in qualifying to finish P8, but his car was caught in the post-start confusion during the race, and he was hit by another car. With the incident costing him on-track position, Jarno fought back, ultimately finishing P10. From P15 on the grid, Timo was trapped behind a group of slower cars, which prevented him from driving at his regular pace and improving position. Timo completed the entire length of the race, but conditions conspired to keep him from finishing higher than P13.
