• The Hillclimb Drive
The Goodwood Hillclimb course is a total of 1.16 miles (approximately 1.86km), consisting mainly of gentle inclines. Each car and driver has the option of entering a formal time trial or performing a demonstration drive to show off their cars to the crowd.
Friday begins with a free drive session, and then one practice session is held on Saturday morning, with another on Saturday afternoon. One time trial is held on Sunday morning, and a second on Sunday afternoon. The quickest of the two laps counts as the driver’s final time.
• This Year’s Time Trial
As with most years, the event was filled with many famous drivers, who chose to either focus on the time trial or thrill the fans with special driving performances. This is what attracts car enthusiasts to Goodwood.
All five of the Toyota cars participated in the demonstration drives rather than the time trial. Each car brought back memories of their glory years, thrilling the crowd by stopping on the course and then sprinting off in front of a cloud of tire smoke, or galloping around the track with dazzling headlights lit, bringing to mind the night driving portion of an endurance race. Without a time limit, the demonstration drivers made sure to give the fans as much for their money as possible.
At the 2005 Goodwood, Justin Law (Jaguar XJR12) recorded the best lap time of 47.96 seconds. The course record is held by Nick Heidfeld, who drove a McLaren Mercedes MP4/13 around the circuit in 41.6 seconds at the 1999 festival. (Official timing provided by the Goodwood Festival of Speed) |
