The site of the United States Grand Prix is the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway, home to the Indy 500. This course, first constructed in 1908, hosted its first F1 World Championship race in 2000. A new infield section was added for the F1 World Championship race, and is used in combination with the existing oval course. Unexpected tire problems last year resulted in only six cars being able to run the race.

2005 grand prix

The United States Grand Prix, the ninth race of the season, was held on June 19, 2005. Unfortunately, only six cars participated in the race, since some tires prepared for the teams could not handle the banking in the final corner. During free practice, Ralf's car crashed, and Ricardo Zonta took Ralf's place for the qualifying session. Jarno won the first-ever pole position for Panasonic Toyota Racing, and Ricardo qualified P13 on the grid. However, after the race formation lap, both cars came in to the garage, voluntarily scratching from the race.
