Main Features of the Supra
1.Pure sports car package focused on performance fundamentals
  • ・In pursuit of the pure sports car ideal, top priority was placed on wheelbase, track width, and center of gravity to accomplish superior handling and stable cornering.
  • ・Sticking with a two-seater layout enabled a 2,470 mm wheelbase, 100 mm shorter than the Toyota 86.
  • ・This gives a wheelbase to track width ratio of just 1.55, among the best in mass-production sports cars, which contributes to highly responsive steering.
  • ・Rigorous attention to center of gravity achieved a COG even lower than the Toyota 86, which is fitted with a boxer engine.
  • ・Weight balance between front and rear is an important factor in cornering performance, and the GR Supra boasts the 50:50 distribution generally considered ideal.
2.Design giving full play to the distinctive layout of a sports car package
  • ・The design concept for this car was a "condensed extreme" Toyota sports model equipped with the L6 power plant in front-engine, rear-drive layout. Exterior:
▽Short wheelbase and large-diameter tires present a side view package with a striking footprint.
▽Combined with the compact two-seater-style passenger compartment, generous track width imparts a super-wide stance.
▽Straight-6 front engine and rear wheel drive layout creates a long-nosed, short-cabin silhouette.
    Interior:
▽Quintessential RWD sports car interior features a letterbox-style instrument panel and a tall, wide console.
▽New-generation compact cockpit layout puts the driver in full control with "shift-by-wire" gear shift, 8.8-inch TFT gauge, and large full-color heads-up display.
  • ・Making the most of the distinctive layout of a sports car package, the GR Supra aspires to a sports style befitting the first global model in the GR series.
  • ・Design features pay tribute to Toyota's sports car heritage, such as the use of a double-bubble roof to reduce wind resistance (as on the Toyota 2000 GT) and condensed body design that gives a muscular presence to the fenders by slanting the lamps inwards (reminiscent of the Toyota 2000 GT and the fourth-generation Supra).
3.High body rigidity for a new dimension in driving
  • ・Body structure uses aluminum and steel as well as high-strength joints between different materials to achieve body rigidity around 2.5 times higher than the Toyota 86. The rigidity even exceeds the Lexus LFA's cabin that uses carbon fiber reinforced polymer.
4.Straight-6 turbo engine continues the Supra legacy, while a straight-4 turbo offers easy access to sporty driving
  • ・A 3.0 liter twin-scroll turbo engine continues the Supra straight-6 legacy.*1 Producing maximum torque of 500 Nm at just 1,600 rpm, this power plant enables drivers to savor acceleration that responds directly to gas pedal control.
  • ・The straight-4 engine offers two tuning options for the 2.0 liter twin-scroll turbo power unit: a high-performance choice with maximum output of 190 kW (258 PS) for nimble, sporty driving, and a gentler unit producing 145 kW (197 PS) for easy access to exhilarating driving from city streets to the open road.
5.Suspension enables precise vehicle control
  • ・New suspension design reduces unsprung weight, achieves highly rigid suspension assemblies, and facilitates minute spring movements. (Front: double-joint spring strut. Rear: multi-link.)
  • ・Some versions are fitted with an adaptive variable suspension system*2 that offers a new dimension in balance between handling and comfort by optimizing shock absorber damping force control on all four wheels according to the drive mode selected and road surface conditions.
6.Active differential for superb cornering and stability
  • ・Electronically controlled multiple plate clutch teams with a vehicle stability control (VSC) system to optimize continuously variable control of the rear-wheel diff lock ratio across the full range from 0 to 100.
  • ・Upon entry to a bend, the system selects a lock ratio offering the perfect balance of cornering performance and stability. During acceleration out of the turn, it increases the lock ratio to maximize traction performance.
7.Performance honed on the streets of the world
  • ・With an emphasis on real-world driving environments, the development process was characterized by rigorous driving on public roads. Needless to say, trials included race-speed laps at Nürburgring, but the development team also chalked up ample street-miles on the country lanes and autobahns of Europe, the ice- and snow-covered roads of Scandinavia, the highways of the United States, and the winding roads of Japan to ensure that the Supra is fine-tuned so that drivers can relish vehicle control even under everyday driving conditions.
  • *1 For the Japan market, the straight-6 engine will be fitted to the RZ, while the SZ-R and SZ versions will be equipped with the straight-4.
  • *2 For the Japan market, the RZ and SZ-R.
