Day 1-9, 14 Jan. - 22 Jan. Driving and pacenote training
As it was the first training in winter conditions for Katsuta and Arai, they concentrated on the things which have to be taken into consideration on snow. In the pacenote training, they focused on driving lines and braking points for winter condition to make faster and safer pacenotes.
Driving training started on the icy handling track. They concentrated on getting the feeling of the grip level, throttle and brake using and steering angle in long corners...and so on. After moving to the forest stage, they also focused on understanding the road conditions such as lines and ruts and practiced in the dark with extra lights.
Day 11-17, 24 Jan. - 30 Jan. Arctic Lapland Rally
Arai and Katsuta participated in Arctic Lapland Rally held in Finland's Lapland. This first round of Finnish National Championship is traditional and well-known with challenging stages surrounded by beautiful landscape.
There is no limitation in recce in this rally although most rallies allow only two times on each stage. As all stages are new for the crew, they repeated recce as much as possible. Long recce consumes their energy and concentration, but it was also a part of the training for them. Detailed pacenotes made carefully and with sincere attitude became one of the reasons for the good result.
During two days the route covered 829 kilometres, 233 of which were special stages driven at maximum speeds.
This was the first snow rally for the young Japanese drivers, but they adapted well to the new elements. Driving a Group N car Hiroki Arai achieved third place overall among hot competition. Out of a total of ten special stages he was fastest Group N competitor on no less than four. This result exceeded the expectations of his coaches, but still did not come as a total surprise.
Arai took to the competition exactly as we had planned. We decided in advance that it is enough to drive at similar speed to what we'd seen in practice. The idea was to start at a consistent pace and towards the end he even managed some fastest times, explained Arai's coach Jouni Ampuja.
Katsuta set off with similar thoughts, but unfortunately ran out of patience on the third stage. He ran off the road, which finished the rally for him. He's fast all right, but it remains a challenge to keep his composure to the finish of a long rally, Ampuja analyses.
Arctic Lapland Rally was won by the hugely experienced multiple Finnish champion Juha Salo with a Peugeot 208 T16 R5. Second and winner of Group N was Teemu Asunmaa with a Subaru Impreza WRX Sti R4. Hiroki Arai used a similar car to finish third overall and second in Group N, 1:37.2 (0.417sec/km) behind Asunmaa.
Two more rounds remain during the winter season of the Finnish Championship. SM Vaakuna Ralli next weekend is based in Mikkeli and two weeks later comes Tahko SM-ralli in Nilsiä. Then there's a bit of a gap before the series continues with three gravel rallies from June onwards.
Driver's diary
- What I learned
- It was one of my dreams to participate in Arctic Lapland Rally, because people say it is the most beautiful and coldest rally in the world, and it attracts many European drivers.
With very challenging stages, it was the toughest and most difficult rally I've ever experienced. It was especially difficult to judge jumps during recce. Making detailed pacenote was one of my objectives this time. I could keep constant pace until the end because of the pacenote we worked on very hard. As the result, I could finished 3rd overall. I'm very proud of that. Thank you very much!
- Comments from instructor
- His performance in the rally was great when noticing that he is still unexperienced as a rally driver. He improved his pace during the rally without pushing over the limits. Because of that he gained also a great result even though it wasn’t the main purpose in this rally. Hiroki followed very well the plan what we had for this rally and training. He gained a lot of experience and he controlled his driving very well.
- What I learned
- It was my first snow rally with the new co-driver, Daniel. I had a very good feeling as Daniel's pacenote reading was perfect and I was being able to follow the note with proper timing. Daniel is a very friendly guy and he also taught me various things. During the stay, I also experienced the world in 35 degrees below zero!
It was very disappointing that I had to retire at SS3. I see the reason in myself. I have been doing circuit race for 10 years, and I was seeing importance only in going flat out. But rally requires strong mentality to judge circumstances and braveness to release throttle sometimes . Once again, I think deeply what is important and necessary to me right now and I will prove that I got correct and clear understanding in the next rally.
- Comments from instructor
- The rally result was very disappointing as he showed very good improvements during the training. It is good that he is not afraid of high speed at all, but we want him to be patient to keep his own driving pace for now and take time to get experience. We are sure Daniel will be a big help for him to make further improvements.
Summary
We were looking forward to the winter season as it offers the best place to learn driving skills in safe condition. Both Arai and Katsuta concentrated on the training well and made huge progress. Cooperation between drivers and co-drivers also went well and we are sure they took further steps in all area. Things were well prepared before the rally with clear plan, but the team saw the both sides of the rallying. As they are still in the phase of learning and development, the most important thing at this stage is to get experience. We are expecting further improvements with both drivers.
