Rally Mexico: day threeTOYOTA GAZOO Racing WRT crews make progress on another tough day in Mexico
Following a tricky start to the rally for everybody on Friday, Saturday was much more straightforward, with all the scheduled stages completed. Both TOYOTA GAZOO Racing WRT crews took advantage of the longest day of competitive action to end up separated by just 0.3 seconds in sixth and seventh places. The team’s engineers resolved the overheating issues encountered yesterday, allowing the drivers to push harder, although ambient conditions were also cooler today. As a result, Jari-Matti Latvala and Juho Hänninen enjoyed perfect reliability and are in a position to both score driver points.
Unusually, some rain and damp sections were forecast for Saturday, which meant that Jari-Matti chose soft tyres. But the rain never came until the evening, which meant that he had to prioritise looking after his tyres rather than extracting maximum performance. No longer first on the road, he benefitted from cleaner surfaces to end the day sixth overall, despite a puncture on SS11 after sliding wide. Juho was still affected by the flu he has suffered from throughout the rally. Despite not feeling very well, he hung on bravely to end the day seventh, with no mechanical issues on his Yaris WRC.
Jari-Matti Latvala (Driver car 10)
”We’ve been managing the car and our situation today and that has worked well for us. The only mistake we made is choosing the wrong tyre: we were actually expecting rain, then it didn't happen, so we ended up running on a tyre that was too soft, which gave us a lot of wear. The team found a solution to the overheating problems that were affecting us yesterday, which meant that we were gradually able to increase the power throughout the day. On the final day tomorrow, our aim is to defend our position and score some points: especially on the Power Stage.”
Juho Hänninen (Driver car 11)
”We did what we could today. Like Jari-Matti, our tyre choice was a bit too soft. Also I wasn’t feeling so well: it’s hard to know how much that affected me, but this afternoon was little better. Generally it was OK on the stages but it felt worse after I stopped. The car felt very good: thank you to the engineers and mechanics for fixing the problem we had yesterday so efficiently. Today we did a lot of valuable mileage, which means that we can be much better in future in these types of conditions.”

A key factor in Mexico is high altitude, with the route climbing to the season’s highest point of 2,737 metres above sea level. The higher the altitude, the thinner the air, which has an effect on the engines. On one hand, the lack of air pressure reduces power by 20 per cent or more. On the other, in thinner air the turbos spin faster. But another important consequence of the thin air is to reduce the efficiency of the cooling system. All these things put together provide a very big test for the engines on the new-for-2017 World Rally Car.
What’s next?
The final day consists of just two stages, with no service in between, and 54.90 competitive kilometres. The first car leaves service at 09:55 and is expected on the finish ramp at 14:30. The rally’s final stage is the Derramadero Power Stage, which carries extra championship points.

Quotes:
Tommi Mäkinen (Team principal)
“Our engineers and mechanics did a great job to sort out the overheating problems we experienced yesterday, so thank you to them for this. The cars were good today, no problems and no repeat of the issue: the only thing for the drivers was outside factors such as tyre choices, a puncture and in Juho’s case, not feeling well. It’s really not been easy for him so he has done very well. Jari-Matti too has extracted the maximum possible today. Tomorrow, our goal is to score driver and manufacturer points with both cars. Considering everything, I am happy with how the rally has gone so far.”
