TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Outlines 2020 Motorsports Activities
TOYOTA GAZOO Racing(TGR) is TOYOTA's racing company positioning motorsports activities as the basis of our quest to make ever-better cars. From products developed through these activities to the establishment of the GR Garage, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing's motorsports activities have been promoted as a comprehensive method of increasing numbers of car fans.
TGR began 2019 by achieving overall victory at the Dakar Rally. In the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), we secured both the team and the driver’s championships, and we won the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the second consecutive year.In the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC), we won the driver's and co-driver's championships. In Japan, we won the championships in SUPER GT and Super Formula, and the class championship in the Japan Rally Championship. 2019 was a successful year in which TGR impressed the strong association between Toyota and motorsports on both Japan and countries abroad. However, we will not rest on our laurels. In order to deliver the dreams and excitement of driving to a wider audience, in 2020 we will continue to engage in a variety of motorsports activities both in Japan and overseas.
The WEC 2019–2020 season will be the last for the TS050 HYBRID, and we intend to secure a third successive victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. For the WEC 2020–2021 season, which begins after the 24 Hours of Le Mans, we intend to participate in the Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) Class using a racing car based on the GR Super Sport that is currently under development; we will announce the team setup at a later date. In the WRC, we intend to overhaul our driver and co-driver line-up. The WRC will return to Japan for the first time in 10 years, with Rally Japan to be held across Aichi and Gifu Prefectures in November. In SUPER GT, the Supra will return to the GT500 Class for the first time in 15 years. In SUPER GT, the Supra will return to the GT500 Class for the first time in 15 years. As far as driver development is concerned, in order to nurture Japanese racing and rally drivers capable of competing on the world stage, we intend to promote the TGR Driver Challenge Program (TGR-DC), which integrates and extends our various existing programs. In addition, we will offer vehicles for ROOKIE Racing so that we can gain expertise from the viewpoints of this private team, which is composed of various drivers, and feed it back into our product development.
With regard to products, we gave the new GR Yaris its world premiere at the Tokyo Auto Salon last month. It is the second model in the GR series to be launched globally. The GR Yaris was developed out of a desire to “once again create a genuine Toyota sports car.” Master Driver Morizo, the motorsports alias of President Akio Toyoda, was involved in evaluating and testing the car from its initial development. Incorporating knowledge accumulated by TGR through its participation in the WRC, the GR Yaris was designed to deliver to customers the excitement of a sports 4WD. Going forward, TGR will continue to take advantage of its motorsports expertise in product development, and seek to further expand the GR line-up.

- From 2020, these programs will be integrated with the TGR Driver Challenge Program (TGR-DC), as part of our efforts to nurture young racing and rally drivers.
- As far as rallies in particular are concerned, in order to nuture young rally drivers to follow in the footsteps of Takamoto Katsuta, who is currently involved in the WRC Challenge Program, we intend to discuss establishing a new TGR-DC framework specifically for rally drivers; drivers would be selected from among scholarship drivers participating in FIA-F4 as well as young drivers competing in domestic rallies.

- Six events and 14 races have been scheduled.
7) 5 Continents Drive Project
- Toyota began its 5 Continents Drive Project in Australia in 2014, with the same aim for "ever-better cars" as motorsports activities of TGR. Employees drive Toyota vehicles by diverse types of roads used by customers around the world, gaining experience and knowledge of road conditions that cannot be predicted or replicated on test courses. The learnings obtained in this exercise supports Toyota's goal of creating "ever-better cars," and cultivates expertise in employees. With the milestone year of 2020, when Tokyo hosts the Olympics and Paralympics approaching, TGR continues to carry out 5 Continents activities.
- In 2019, the 5 Continents Drive Project moved to the Asian continent, and in February and March drivers took to roads in Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and the UAE. The basic performance of the Land Cruiser and Hilux proved to be of the utmost importance, as the vehicles were used as tools to tug boats in fishing villages, and to transport lives in the unending inland deserts. Yet there were also regions along the Drive Project route where the “fun to drive” concept was well appreciated. On the roads of the Middle East, team drivers refined all their bodily senses and experienced things that could not be fully understood on test courses alone.
- From September to November 2019, the Drive Project tackled India and countries in Southeast Asia, namely Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam. Extreme changes in weather conditions within a single day, rough, pothole-ridden roads, people and animals crossing roads at will, motorcycles riding down roads the wrong way, and major traffic jams—team drivers faced environments that demanded high levels of concentration, as well as the ability to both respond calmly to various situations and act with consideration for nearby road users.
- The Asia leg of the 5 Continents Drive Project continues in 2020. The team will traverse China and East Asia, and finally arriving in Japan for the final goal.
Year | Continent | Distance driven | Number of days driven | Characteristics |
---|---|---|---|---|
2014 | Australia | 20,000 km | 72days | Deserts, poorly maintained roads, and other rough terrain were navigated in a region that is said to encapsulate a variety of roads from around the world. |
2015 | North America | 28,000 km | 109days | The North American leg was divided into a summer and winter season: Death Valley and other regions of intense heat were tackled in the summer, while Alaska and eastern Canada were driven in the winter. |
2016 | Latin America | 20,000 km | 84days | Mud roads in the tropics, mountain passes at an altitude of 5,640 meters, deserts, and other roads were traveled. |
2017 | Europe | 21,000 km | 85days | In the birthplace of the automobile, Toyota cars were compared to their European counterparts as they strove to enhance the collection and analysis of driving data. Divided into summer and winter seasons, participating cars drove highways and embarked on long-distance journeys. |
2018 | Africa | 10,600 km | 49days | Commuter and daily use roads, unpaved roads, high-altitude mountain roads, safaris, deserts, and other road types unique to Africa. |
2019 | Asia Middle-East | 3,500 km | 20days | Endless inland deserts, dry riverbeds, and 3,000-meter-plus highlands in Saudi Arabia mean the basic performance of the Land Cruiser and Hilux, which are used to transport lives, is of the utmost importance. |
Asia India and Southeast Asia | 8,600 km | 51days | Pothole-ridden roads, people and animals crossing the roads at will, motorcycles riding down roads the wrong way, major traffic jams, and other environments that demand high levels of concentration, as well as the ability both to respond calmly to various situations and to act with consideration for nearby road users. |
