TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Outlines 2020 Motorsports Activities

2) Japanese Super Formula Championship

- Toyota Racing Development (TRD) will supply six teams and 11 vehicles with the Biz-01F two-liter four-cylinder direct-injection gasoline turbo engine.

- Sacha Fenestraz is a new addition to the driver line-up.

- All vehicles will be equipped with tires made by Yokohama Rubber.

3) Japanese Rally Championship

- TGR will continue to participate in the Japanese Rally Championship in 2020.

- As part of our efforts for making ever-better cars, we intend to refine both our people and cars through our participation in the highest-category rally championship in Japan.

- The team's engineers and mechanics are Toyota employees, and the company's employees are involved in all aspects of the JRC, from car manufacturing to participation in the rallies themselves.

4) e-Motorsports

- In 2019, e-Motorsports was adopted as part of a culture program at the National Sports Festival.

- In 2020, TGR intends to continue to engage in e-Motorsports, a category of new motorsports. We will also continue to be the official partner for the FIA GT Championship, and again host the GR Supra GT Cup, a one-make race for the GR Supra. Further details will be announced in due course.

6) Driver Development Initiatives in Japan

- Previously, TGR operated a number of programs aimed at nurturing Japanese drivers capable of competing in races and rallies both in Japan and overseas—the TGR Rally Challenge Program, the WEC Challenge Program, the Toyota Young Driver's Program, and the Formula Toyota Racing School. ・ From 2020, these programs will be integrated with the TGR Driver Challenge Program (TGR-DC), as part of our efforts to nurture young racing and rally drivers.

7) 5 Continents Drive Project

- Toyota began its 5 Continents Drive Project in Australia in 2014, with the same aim for "ever-better cars" as motorsports activities of TGR. Employees drive Toyota vehicles by diverse types of roads used by customers around the world, gaining experience and knowledge of road conditions that cannot be predicted or replicated on test courses. The learnings obtained in this exercise supports Toyota's goal of creating "ever-better cars," and cultivates expertise in employees. With the milestone year of 2020, when Tokyo hosts the Olympics and Paralympics approaching, TGR continues to carry out 5 Continents activities.

- In 2019, the 5 Continents Drive Project moved to the Asian continent, and in February and March drivers took to roads in Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and the UAE. The basic performance of the Land Cruiser and Hilux proved to be of the utmost importance, as the vehicles were used as tools to tug boats in fishing villages, and to transport lives in the unending inland deserts. Yet there were also regions along the Drive Project route where the “fun to drive” concept was well appreciated. On the roads of the Middle East, team drivers refined all their bodily senses and experienced things that could not be fully understood on test courses alone.

- From September to November 2019, the Drive Project tackled India and countries in Southeast Asia, namely Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam. Extreme changes in weather conditions within a single day, rough, pothole-ridden roads, people and animals crossing roads at will, motorcycles riding down roads the wrong way, and major traffic jams—team drivers faced environments that demanded high levels of concentration, as well as the ability to both respond calmly to various situations and act with consideration for nearby road users.

- The Asia leg of the 5 Continents Drive Project continues in 2020. The team will traverse China and East Asia, and finally arriving in Japan for the final goal.

8) FIA World Rally Championship (WRC)

- TGR will race the "Yaris WRC" developed in Finland under the leadership of Team Principal Tommi Mäkinen.

- The engine is a 1.6-liter direct-injection turbo GI4A, developed at Toyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG).

9) FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC)

- The FIA World Endurance Championship has taken place every year since 2012.

- The opening round of the 2019–2020 season took place at Silverstone on September 1, 2019; the final round will be the 2020 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which will take place on June 13 and 14, 2020.

- TGR will compete in the races with two of the improved "TS050 HYBRID" models, which are developed and operated by TMG.

- The THS-R (TOYOTA Hybrid System-Racing) powertrain, developed at TOYOTA Higashifuji Technical Center in Japan, not only follows the existing four-wheel regenerative/drive system, but also improves the reliability of the engine, electric motors/generators and batteries. These technologies will be leveraged to the mass-production hybrid and electric vehicles.

- TS050 HYBRID will be equipped with Michelin tires.

- For the WEC 2020–2021 season, TGR will enter two Le Mans Prototype Hypercars, which are based on the production GR Super Sport (tentative name) currently under development, in the Le Mans Hypercar Class. The eight-round season will begin with the 6 Hours of Silverstone on September 5, 2020, and conclude with the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 12 and 13, 2021. The driver line-up will be announced at a later date.

10) Nürburgring 24 Hours endurance race

- TGR positions the Nürburgring 24 Hours endurance race as the starting point of activities aimed to make ever-better cars, and will participate for the 14th consecutive year in 2020. Through participation in the race, we seek activities aimed at developing our people and cars, and support the development of Toyota's production vehicles.

- The 48th Nürburgring 24 Hours endurance race (official name: 48. ADAC TOTAL 24h-Rennen) will take place on May 23--24, 2020

- In 2020, TGR will enter the LEXUS LC for a third year in a row. The car will be fitted with a number of advanced development technologies that will be used in future sportscars and other production vehicles, and so support the creation of ever-better cars.

11) Dakar Rally

- TGR entered four rally raid-specification Hilux cars into the 2020 Dakar Rally, which was held in Saudi Arabia in January.

- TGR provides support to Toyota Auto Body Co., Ltd., whose Team Land Cruiser Toyota Auto Body (TLC) rally team participates in the Dakar Rally with the Toyota Land Cruiser 200.

- In 2020, TGR won the production car category for the seventh year in succession.

- Hino Motors, Ltd.'s HINO TEAM SUGAWARA won the Under 10-liter Class Truck Category for the 11th year in succession.

12) Super Taikyu

- We will supply GR Yaris and GR Supra to ROOKIE Racing which will participate in the Super Taikyu series.

- Toyota’s master driver, Morizo, will join ROOKIE Racing, a private team that includes racers, rallyists, assessment drivers and others. Various drivers will race with two cars and feed back their own viewpoints which will be used to create ever-better cars.

13) Japan-Based Participatory Motorsport Events

In the hope of extending the enjoyment of driving, TGR will provide a full range of driving activities at venues around Japan in collaboration with the various regions and circuits, with increased support for people who would like to compete in participatory motorsports events such as races and rallies.

14) GR Series and GR Garage

In coordination with the launch of the GR series, a number of dealers in Japan are establishing a series of GR Garage shops in cooperation with TGR. The garages will act as regional bases that aim to bring the joy of cars to a wide range of customers, with a focus on sports cars and motorsports.
Staffed at all times by dedicated GR Consultants, GR Garage provides a place where car-loving customers can talk with the staff and have fun. The garages will provide opportunities for customers to test-drive the 86 and GR series vehicles¹. In addition, they will sell custom parts and TGR collection items, host variety of events and activities, and create a place for adults and children to indulge their love of cars².
GR Garage shops seek to become "the most exciting car shops in town"―places where car fans can gather, engage in conversation, and share their love of cars. Fifty-four GR Garage shops are scheduled to have opened by the end of March 2020.
