ABOUT WEC

ABOUT FIA WORLD ENDURANCE CHAMPIONSHIP.

A CHALLENGE OF SPEED
—AND INNOVATION.

WEC is short for the FIA World Endurance Championship. It is the world title of endurance races, held in numerous racing tracks in world wide, and includes the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which is said to be one of the three largest scale races in the world.

Its history begins with the 1953 World Sportscar Championship. It continued until 1992, with some changes to name and regulations on the way. The WEC as it exists today began in 2012 and enters its seventh season this year. Last season, the 2018-2019 season, consisted of eight races held over two years, with most races taking six hours, except for the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 1,000 Miles of Sevring (approximately 1,600km).
The 2019-2020 season begins at Silverstone (England) in September 2019, continues eight races and finishes with the 24 hours of Le Mans in June 2020. The races of the 2019-2020 season are varied, with four hours races, twenty four hour races, and 1,000 mile races.

The cars participating in the WEC consist of two types: sports prototype cars and grand touring cars (GT cars). These are sorted into four classes depending on car and driver, and each class competes for titles for drivers and manufacturers. The names of the four classes are "LM P1" and "LM P2", for sports prototype cars, and "LM GTE-Pro" and "LM GTE-Am" for GT cars; each car has a sticker to display which class it is participating in.

CATEGORY

TWO TYPES OF THE CARS & FOUR CLASSES

Participating cars are sorted into four classes: LM P1, LM P2, LM GTE-Pro, and LM GTE-Am. In addition to this, drivers are classified into four levels based on their racing careers: "platinum", which is the highest level, "gold", "silver", and "bronze". Each class has limitations on what the driver can participate in, such as bronze drivers not being able to participate in the LM P1.

Le Mans Prototype1(LM P1-H / LM P1)

  • HY
LM P1-H / LM P1

Hybrid cars with energy regeneration systems are ranked as LM P1-H, while non-hybrid cars on non-manufacturer teams (privateers) LM P1. They are closed cars, or cars with roofs, having red numbers and LED indicators. In addition, hybrid cars are marked with a sticker with the letters "HY" in white on a red background.

Cars must be less than 4650mm in length, more than 1800mm but less than 1900 in width, and less than 1050mm in height. Cars must weight 878kg or more for LM P1-H while 833kg or more for LM P1.
The number of cylinders in the engine and maximum displacement is unrestricted, and participants must attach a fuel flow gauge to restrict fuel flow.

The power capacity of hybrid cars and non-hybrid cars are balanced by EoT (Equivalence of Technology), which controls fuel capacity and fuel flow. Further, the 2019-2020 season will see the implementation of the success handicap, which is adjusted for every car based on the championship points they have at the point of the race preceding their current race. This will not be applied during the final race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Le Mans Prototype2(LM P2)

  • P2
LM P2

Primarily for privateers with prototype sportscars. Currently only closed-top car are permitted to make entry to this class although open-top type chassis was accepted under the former regulation. Car numbers and LED indicator lights are blue. They carry white stickers with "P2" written on them in blue.
Cars must be under 4750mm in length, above 1800mm and below 1900mm in width, and below 1050mm in height. Cars must weight 930kg or more. They must have a maximum fuel capacity of 75 liters. Participating teams must include at least one silver or bronze driver.

It is a category with many pro drivers, who primarily use of publicly sold sportscars with either open or closed bodies, two doors, and two seats, or two seats both in back and front. Their numbers and LED indicator lights are green. They carry white stickers with "PRO" written on them in green.
All wheel drives, automatic gearboxes, semi-automatic gearboxes, and active suspensions are banned, and there is no limit on driver classification, but most drivers are either gold or silver.

Le Mans Grand Touring Endurance Am(LM GTE Am)

  • AM
LM GTE Am

While the cars and basics are the same in LM GTE Pro, the Am class is limited to cars of previous year and cars following regulations from the previous year. As the name suggests, it is by definition a class for amateur racers, and cars have orange numbering and LED indicator lights. Cars carry a white sticker with "AM" written on them in orange.
While the cars abide by the rules for the Pro class, participating teams need at least one bronze driver and one more bronze or silver driver.
