TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team remains in control at Rally Sweden with Elfyn Evans leading a lockout of the top four positions with one day remaining.
Saturday’s route through the snow-covered Swedish landscape totalled 104.42 competitive kilometres, focused on another loop of three fast forest stages repeated either side of mid-day service.
After conceding the lead to team-mate Takamoto Katsuta late on Friday, Evans regained first place with a strong stage win in the morning’s opening test. He then came within one second of the best time in the next two stages to increase his advantage to 16.1 seconds by the end of the morning loop. Evans claimed a further stage win in the second test of the afternoon loop, at which point his lead stood at 18s.
Having struggled for grip at first, Katsuta found improved feeling and pace as the afternoon went on, ending the day 13.3s from Evans.
Katsuta was also able to respond to the speed of chasing team-mate Sami Pajari, who won both SS12 and SS14 and is 12.1s further back from Katsuta overnight.
Starting the day sixth overall after a challenging Friday, Oliver Solberg instantly gained two positions to take fourth in the morning’s first stage. He went on to win SS11 and ended the day 33s away from Pajari.
Two GR Yaris Rally2 drivers remain locked in battle for WRC2 honours, with 16.6s separating Roope Korhonen and Teemu Suninen in 10th and 11th overall.
Quotes:
Jari-Matti Latvala (Team Principal)
“We can be very happy with how our rally is going, especially as we have four cars out front. Our car has been performing well and our drivers have been fighting closely with each other and pushing hard, but not making mistakes. Elfyn has been very strong again here, driving fast but smoothly. We could see his performance already on Friday and now with a better road position today, he was able to deliver the times consistently. Taka was feeling earlier that he was missing some grip, but this afternoon he was improving and doing well. Sami has also been getting faster and faster and we know the speed that Oliver has, so it’s shaping up to be an exciting Sunday.”
Elfyn Evans (Driver car 33)
“It’s been a good day for us overall. In the morning we were strong and that’s when we were able to make the biggest gains. This afternoon was a bit more mixed. It was much harder on tyres than we expected, but we still got through it cleanly. Tomorrow can still be quite a challenging day: the longer stage we do twice is a tough one and it’s been reversed for this year. The gaps are still small, so I’m sure it’s going to be a good fight.”
Oliver Solberg (Driver car 99)
“This morning was great for us. The conditions were consistent, the feeling was good and we could catch some time and some positions. This afternoon I think the road cleaning was playing a bigger part again. There was a lot of loose snow and I struggled a bit with the rhythm and was sideways a lot. At least we could get up to fourth place today which I think was the realistic goal, as my team-mates are doing a great job in front, and I’ll keep doing my best tomorrow.”
Takamoto Katsuta (Driver car 18)
“I can’t be so happy with how today went, I think it could have been much better. In the morning I was struggling with the grip and I’m not completely sure why, but we were losing a lot of time. The conditions are tough because it’s very cold, so in the afternoon we had to manage the tyres as well, but thankfully we didn’t lose so much time. I feel the car has been working well and when we had a good feeling, we had the pace. There’s still one day to go and I’ll definitely try my best.”
Sami Pajari (Driver car 5)
“I’m pretty satisfied with today and especially this afternoon when we could take a couple of stage wins. I have a really nice feeling with the car and I’m enjoying the driving in these proper winter rally conditions. Taka has also been pretty strong this afternoon, so he hasn’t been making it easy for us to try and close in. There’s still quite a lot of kilometres to go tomorrow and we just need to try and continue the same rhythm and keep pushing.”
