Rally Sweden

February sees the season’s only full-snow event, staged in Sweden, northern Europe

In freezing conditions of northern Europe, Sweden sets the stage for Rally Sweden, WRC’s only full-snow rally. The SS of Rallye Monte-Carlo, the year’s opening event, are on snowy roads, but Rally Sweden is the only event where the entire course is under snow. The rally cars are fitted with tyres whose tread is embedded with special metal studs for the snowy roads. The Service Park, which is central to the rally, is located in Torsby, in central southern Sweden, and some of the SS take place in adjacent Norway. The SS are high speed overall, and another popular feature of Rally Sweden are the breathtaking jumps. Toyota returned to WRC in 2017 for the first time in 18 years, winning overall in this second rally of the season with the team of Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila.

A high-speed course where aerodynamic performance is important

Rally Sweden is an event held on slippery snow-covered roads, but the special studded tyres cling tightly to the compacted snowy and icy roads, and the road grip capability is better than would be expected. Many SS feature a succession of gentle, high-speed corners, thus the average SS speed is among the top three of the WRC. The aerodynamic performance of cars is extremely important in such a high speed rally, and cars can maintain stability and high speeds if they are able to achieve sufficient downforce. The Yaris WRC was designed in pursuit of aerodynamic performance, making it well-suited to both this rally and the other Nordic event, Rally Finland.
