The Tour de Corse, with its long history and traditions, is held on sealed roads on the Mediterranean island of Corsica.
The Tour de Corse is staged on the French Mediterranean island of Corsica. The rally was first held in 1956, giving it a long history, and the rally was included as an event in the first year the WRC was staged, in 1973. From 2010 to 2014, the WRC French round was temporarily held in mainland France as the Rallye de France Alsace, however from 2015, the Tour de Corse was again added to the calendar. Tour de Corse is the first full-tarmac rally of the 2019 season. The Service Park is located in Bastia, in the island’s northeast, and the rally passes through Corsica’s steep mountainous roads. The contest takes place over a large area, with the route including courses in the west and south of the island.
The Tour de Corse is mostly staged on narrow roads, with a succession of twists and corners. This is why it is known as the “Rally of 10,000 Corners.” As there are few straight sections on these roads through mountains and along the coast, average speeds are not very high. However, because even a small driving error can lead to loss of time or driving off-course, drivers require a high level of precision. Although all the SS are on sealed road, there are many rough portions, due to surface deterioration, and tyre grip level is inconsistent. Consequently, it is considered to be an extremely technical rally. Toyota has won Tour de Corse on three occasions previously, in 1991, 1994 and 1995, and Jari-Matti Latvala has enjoyed victory once, in 2015.
