Toyota, the world's biggest carmaker, and the tyre manufacturer MICHELIN will work together as the Japanese make prepares to return to world class endurance racing in 2012.
The two industry giants have been partners in motorsport for almost two decades. In 1993, Toyota Motorsport GmbH called on MICHELIN's expertise to equip its factory-run Celicas in the World Rally Championship. Toyota and MICHELIN won the Drivers' and Manufacturers' titles together in 1993 and 1994, before marking Toyota's final year in the WRC with another Manufacturers' crown in 1999.
In 1998, the Japanese brand took up the challenge of the Le Mans 24 Hours in the prototype class, once again in association with its tyre partner MICHELIN. The Toyota GT-One obtained one pole position and two fastest race laps in the world famous endurance race.
In 1999, Toyota and MICHELIN announced their partnership in Formula One. After two years of intensive testing, the MICHELIN-equipped TF101 made its F1 debut at the Australian Grand Prix in 2002.
The French tyre manufacturer continued to equip the Japanese single-seaters until 2005, when Toyota and MICHELIN came fourth in the F1 World Championship with a score of two pole positions and five podium finishes.
The 2012 season will see MICHELIN and Toyota return to Le Mans and the World Endurance Championship (WEC).
