Ralf Schumacher scored three more points for Panasonic Toyota
Racing when he finished sixth in the Hungarian Grand Prix, but team
mate Jarno Trulli retired with five laps to go after an engine
failure.
Schumacher and Trulli started sixth and eighth on the grid in
Budapest as Formula 1 experienced its first wet race of the season.
In the early stages conditions were better suited to Michelin's
intermediate tyre and those drivers on Bridgestone rubber,
Schumacher and Trulli included, battled hard to maintain pace in
what turned out to be an incident-packed race.
"The tyres and the conditions have been the dominant factor all weekend," Schumacher said. "Leading up to the race the
temperature was lower than anticipated when tyre selections for the
event were made and everyone suffered with lack of grip to a
varying degree. I was actually confident that we had a good dry
tyre for the race but that became irrelevant when we had the first
wet Hungarian GP that anyone could remember.
"It was quite a turbulent race and, in the early stages
especially, it was like driving on ice. The decision to change onto
dry tyres could have been risky but it worked out well and we were
quick. I was able to make up some lost ground and we were the first
Bridgestone car to finish. My best lap was only a tenth slower than
the race winner's."
For Trulli it was another 'character-building'race.
"Nothing went our way at all," Jarno said. "On the first lap
I was hit and lost time and then I was in trouble with lack of
grip. The timing of the safety car was not kind to us either and we
only really started to go well when the track dried and the
temperatures went up. Then we had the engine failure and so,
everything considered, it was a day to forget."
Both championship protagonists, Fernando Alonso and Michael
Schumacher, failed to finish and it was left to a delighted Jenson
Button to score his and Lucky Strike Honda's first Grand Prix win,
ahead of team McLaren Mercedes driver Pedro de la Rosa, who also
achieved his first podium finish. The same was true for the BMW
Sauber team, for whom Nick Heidfeld finished third and debutant
Robert Kubica was seventh. Rubens Barrichello finished fourth with
the second Honda, ahead of David Coulthard's Red Bull, while
Felipe Massa claimed the final point for Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro.
Senior General Manager, Chassis, Pascal Vasselon, said: "It was
an incident-packed race that unfortunately did not fall for us,
even though we had prepared well and factored in the wet weather
expectations when we arrived at our set-up. We did the best we
could in the conditions and again showed strong pace at the end.
Conditions like that are always a bit of a lottery and we expect
that normal service will be resumed in Istanbul!"
