GR-FOUR

In the world of motor sports, drivers push the limits to extremes. Taking their machines to road surfaces, distances and drive times never experienced in ordinary life.
At Toyota, we know those limits and, through improvement after repeated improvement, exceed them to reach new heights.
GR-FOUR is the child of rallies raced on streets worldwide and punishing 24-hour endurance on high-speed circuits.
Extreme in both performance and endurance. A one-of-a-kind sports 4WD at home in the most grueling motor sports. That’s GR-FOUR.

Philosophy of
GR-FOUR Development

  • A better car for the

    frontiers of motor sports

It’s often said that parts that break down after 200,000 km in normal driving last barely 1,000 km in motor sports.
Toyota confronts this harsh driving environment with the attitude, “if it breaks, we’ll fix it.” Through these incremental improvements, GR YARIS and GR COROLLA have continued to advance.
This commitment to overcoming repeated challenges is the cornerstone of the drive performance and reliability that make GR-FOUR great.
  • Mistakes are just steps

    to success

One mistake can break a car.
That’s not a bad thing. In fact, we welcome it.
The spirit of thriving on challenges and pushing the limits to solve problems is the story of how automobiles improve.
Fear that a car will fail is a roadblock to achieving a better drive.
  • “Driver first” carmaking

In the world of motor sports, races of 100 minutes are decided by fractions of a second. Improving durability, even to gain just a few more meters, is a must in this world.
As we pursue constant improvement under these extreme conditions, what’s most important of all is the conversation between driver and car. The words and feelings of drivers as they recount their driving experiences offer clues we can use to make cars ever better.

CELICA GT-FOUR, a Car That Rules the World’s Roads

In the 1989 WRC, Toyota entered the ST-165 CELICA GT-FOUR. Later, Toyota moved on to the ST-185 CELICA GT-FOUR, which sported a racing chassis, water-cooler intercooler and metal turbo. The switch established Toyota’s supremacy, with three consecutive WRC victories from 1992 to 1994 and two consecutive wins in 1993 and 1994 in the Manufacturer category.

The CELICA that supported Toyota in its WRC golden age sported a 2 L turbo output 3S-GTE engine. CELICA advanced with each passing year. To utilize its high torque to the max, the CELICA incorporated the first mechanical 4WD developed by Toyota. This was the genesis of the CELICA GT-FOUR. Later, the CELICA GT-FOUR was equipped with a rear differential gear featuring Japan’s first Torsen® LSD.

Born to race, the CELICA GT-FOUR keeps on evolving. This was the moment when the design concept that informs all modern GR car manufacturing was born at Toyota.

ー GR-FOUR
From GT-FOUR to GR-FOUR

It is now two decades since the CELICA GT-FOUR’s championship years.
GR was born in 2015 with the aim of “making ever-better motorsports-bred cars.” In 2017, GR staged its return to WRC alongside the WRC YARIS.

Developed in the crucible of motor sports, constantly evolving, the GR YARIS was born in 2020 to win the modern WRC. Equipped to conquer any kind of road the world can hurl at it, the GR YARIS hums with a high-power 1.6 L straight-three engine, the G16E-GTS, under its hood. To transmit all of that awesome power to the road without spilling a drop, a tenacious sports 4WD system was developed: the GR-FOUR.

As with other GR-FOUR vehicles, the GR COROLLA is packed with state-of-the-art technologies, such as an active torque sprit 4WD system and 4WD mode select, as well as a power unit built to leave the competition in the dust. The GR COROLLA has come to symbolize the creation of automobiles through motor sports.

Born with the CELICA GT-FOUR, the concept of developing cars using motor sports as the starting point has been paid forward to the GR-FOUR, through which it continues to evolve.

Stiff competition gives rise to the cars of the future.

The GR-FOUR contends for supremacy in the global racing arena. As it notches win after win, including the WRC, Toyota never forgets the original spirit of GR.

In 2025 Toyota announced that GR YARIS will compete in Nürburgring 24 Hours, the endurance race that launched GR and Akio “Morizo” Toyoda to fame. Nürburgring is regarded as the world’s most punishing endurance race, a contest that tests both driver and machine.
It is the crucible in which Morizo burnished his skills and the GR development program was forged. In this unforgiving arena, the GR works team (TGR) and Morizo’s private team (Rookie Racing (RR)) will stage their comebacks, this time united under the banner TGRR. Now ready and eager to take on the world, TGRR aim to rekindle the spirit of adventure that launched their racing odyssey.

At Tokyo Auto Salon 2025, Toyota announced the GR YARIS M Concept. This concept car incorporates a reimagined version of the GR-FOUR power train and a 2.0 L straight-four turbo engine. The engine is mid-mounted, opening a new chapter in automaking.

Car development is not just about racing. For Toyota, it’s a continuing commitment to driver-first car manufacturing. That’s the credo of GR. Toyota will continue to cultivate people and cars that can rise to the challenge of the race circuit, using motor sports as the launchpad for creation of great cars.
