The longest-running WRC rally, staged in the Principality of Monaco and France
Rallye Monte-Carlo, first held in 1911, is the WRC boasting the longest history. The Service Park is predominately located in Gap, southern France, and the special stages (SS) are also mainly in a mountainous region of France. However, the ceremonial finish is traditionally held in Monaco Park in front of the Palace. Rallye Monte-Carlo is basically a tarmac (sealed road) rally. The road surface conditions are not uniform, however, and much snow falls in the mountainous area. Consequently, Rallye Monte-Carlo is considered the most challenging event of WRC. Toyota was the first Japanese manufacturer to achieve overall victory at Rallye Monte-Carlo in 1991. It also secured victories in 1993 and 1998. Furthermore, the current team principal, Tommi Mäkinen, won the rally for four consecutive years, from 1999 to 2002.
Being able to handle the road surface conditions, which change from moment to moment, is the key to success or failure in Rallye Monte-Carlo. Roads in the mountainous SS are often covered with snow, however it is uncommon for the entire course to be under snow: conditions change frequently—from icy roads, to sleet, with both wet and dry road surfaces. Consequently, drivers must respond instantly to the road surface changes, and need to be able to anticipate what lies ahead. Cars in the Rallye Monte-Carlo use various tyres, such as those for sealed-roads and snowy roads. The selection of tyres to suit the road is extremely important, making this a rally that tests the team’s overall capabilities more than any other event.
