The road to Wrc Since 2015

In 2017, after an 18-year absence, the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing WRT returned to the WRC stage. From the chance encounter between MORIZO and Tommi Mäkinen
that brought about the team’s return, to winning the Rally Sweden—where the team got its first victory after 18 years—and up to the present day.
Racing on various road conditions the team has gained extensive experience,
we will take you to look back on the team’s efforts as it works to leverage that experience in making of “ever-better” cars.

CNN follows behind the scenes as the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Team works to fulfill its mission—namely, ensuring the technology gained through having its cars endure the harshest rally conditions is passed along to Toyota’s fleet of road cars.

Rally Finland, a high-speed rally where the average speed reaches 120 km/h, is raced on the same roads as those used by the general public. Finland is also the home of the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Team, which CNN closely followed. The allure of rally racing is explored from various angles and perspectives in and outside the team, including those of Team Principal Tommi Mäkinen, driver, co-driver, engineer, fan, and video producer.
Though it won its second consecutive rally championship, that is not Toyota’s only aim. In addition to building cars capable of winning races, the team works to ensure related technology and insight is fed back to Toyota for use in its road cars, so better cars can be built for all.

WRC 2018 Rd.10 Rally Turkey - Highlights

The TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team has finished first and second on a gruelling Rally Turkey with drivers Ott Tänak and Jari-Matti Latvala. It is the first such result for the team since its return to the FIA World Rally Championship at the start of 2017, and moves the squad to the top of the manufacturers' standings. It is the third win in a row for Tänak and the Toyota Yaris WRC: the first time any driver or team has achieved such a streak since the latest era of World Rally Cars was introduced last season.

WRC 2018 Rd.9 Rally Germany - Highlights

The TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team is celebrating a second straight victory after Ott Tänak followed his Rally Finland triumph by securing victory on Rallye Deutschland.
The result is the maiden win on asphalt for the Toyota Yaris WRC. As in Finland, the team achieved a double podium result, with Esapekka Lappi finishing in third place to help Toyota climb to second in the manufacturers' championship and close to within 13 points of the lead.

WRC 2018 Rd.8 Rally Finland - Highlights

The TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team is celebrating victory on home soil on Rally Finland after Ott Tänak sealed a hugely impressive win by setting the fastest time on the Power Stage. Jari-Matti Latvala clinched third place to give the team a fantastic double podium.

WRC 2018 Rd.5 Rally Argentina - Highlights

Ott Tänak and the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team have secured a stunning victory on Rally Argentina: the Estonian's first win with the team in only his fifth event in the Toyota Yaris WRC. Tänak and co-driver Martin Järveoja were dominant after taking the lead on the first full day, winning 10 stages across Friday and Saturday before controlling their lead over notoriously tough stages on Sunday, finishing up 33.7 seconds clear of the competition.

WRC 2017 Rd.2 Rally Sweden 2017 - Highlights

For the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing WRT, which has its development base in Finland, Rally Sweden is like a second home event. Team Principal Tommi Mäkinen is from Finland, as is driver Jari-Matti Latvala, who is especially good at the snow stages and known as the “Flying Fin” for the speeds he attains.
Showcasing his skills, Latvala won the Rally racing at breathtaking speeds.

WRC 2017 Rd.1 Rally Monte Carlo - Highlights

The Monte Carlo Rally marked Toyota’s return to the WRC after an 18-year absence. TOYOTA GAZOO Racing WRT Team Principal Tommi Mäkinen won the Monte Carlo Rally four consecutive times from 1999 to 2002 and adopted a deliberate approach for the race on a course he knows so well.
The Toyota Yaris WRC demonstrated great speed in the rally, climbing up the leaderboard early from the start of the stage with the pair of Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila piloting the car to a second-place finish in Toyota’s first race back. A great result.

Helsinki, December 13th 2016 –TOYOTA GAZOO Racing launched the Toyota Yaris WRC and presented its driver line-up for the 2017 season in front of more than 100 media.

While expressing the greatest respect for TOYOTA GAZOO Racing WRT Team Principal Tommi Mäkinen, who won the WRC Drivers’ Championship four times, MORIZO gets behind the wheel of the Yaris WRC to put the car through its paces.
